The spread of English as the default language of commerce, research and online communication is one of the most striking cultural developments of the past century. Although this trend carries genuine risks for linguistic diversity, I believe its practical benefits are considerably greater.
The clearest advantage is that a shared language dramatically lowers the cost of cooperation. A physicist in Tashkent, a pharmaceutical researcher in Seoul and an engineer in Brazil can read the same journals, attend the same conferences and jointly publish findings without the delay and expense of translation. The speed with which vaccines were developed during the recent pandemic owed a great deal to the fact that laboratories worldwide could exchange data instantly in a common language. Commerce benefits similarly: a small exporter in Central Asia can now negotiate directly with buyers in Europe, an opportunity that scarcely existed a generation ago.
The disadvantages, however, should not be dismissed. Minority languages are being abandoned at an alarming rate, and each loss removes a distinct way of describing the world, along with the oral literature and traditional knowledge it carried. There is also an issue of fairness: native speakers enjoy an unearned advantage in international examinations, job interviews and academic publishing, while equally capable non-native speakers are judged partly on fluency rather than ideas.
These costs, though real, are not inevitable consequences of learning English. Countries such as Finland and Singapore demonstrate that a population can achieve high English proficiency while actively protecting national languages through education policy and public broadcasting.
On balance, therefore, the advantages of a global language clearly outweigh the drawbacks, provided that governments treat multilingualism, rather than replacement, as the goal.
