The question of how families should respond to children's growing use of digital devices divides opinion. While some parents impose rigid time limits, others prefer to teach responsible habits. Both approaches have merit, but I believe the appropriate balance depends primarily on the age of the child.
Those who advocate strict limits base their case on well-documented harms. Excessive screen use displaces sleep, physical activity and face-to-face conversation, all of which are essential to healthy development. Paediatric research has repeatedly linked late-evening device use to shortened sleep duration in adolescents, and a child absorbed in a tablet is not running, reading or negotiating with siblings. Since young children cannot yet regulate their own behaviour, external limits are, in effect, the only limits that exist.
Advocates of education, on the other hand, argue that prohibition is both impractical and short-sighted. Technology is now embedded in schooling and employment, and a young person who has never learned to evaluate an online source, protect their privacy or recognise manipulative design will be poorly equipped for adult life. Moreover, strict bans frequently provoke concealment: teenagers denied access simply use devices elsewhere, beyond any parental guidance whatsoever.
In my view, these positions are complementary rather than contradictory. For children under roughly twelve, firm limits are indispensable, because self-regulation has not yet developed. As adolescence begins, however, control should progressively give way to conversation, with parents explaining the reasoning behind restrictions and gradually transferring responsibility to the child.
In conclusion, although both strategies address genuine concerns, the most effective approach is a graduated one, moving from parental restriction in early childhood towards guided independence in the teenage years.
