The line graph illustrates how many mobile phone and fixed landline subscriptions there were per 100 inhabitants of a particular country over a twenty-four-year period from 2000 to 2024.

Overall, mobile subscriptions rose dramatically and overtook landlines within the first decade, whereas landline connections declined steadily throughout the period. By 2024 there were roughly fifteen times as many mobile subscriptions as landline ones.

In 2000, mobile phones were still comparatively rare, at only 12 subscriptions per 100 people, less than a third of the figure for landlines, which stood at 46. Over the following six years, however, mobile ownership climbed sharply to 58, overtaking landlines at some point around 2006. The upward trend continued, reaching 104 per 100 people in 2012 — a figure exceeding the size of the population itself, indicating that many individuals held more than one subscription.

Landline connections, by contrast, fell consistently. Having remained almost unchanged between 2000 and 2006, they dropped markedly to 33 in 2012 and then to just 18 in 2018. Meanwhile, mobile subscriptions continued to grow, although the rate of increase slowed considerably after 2018, rising only marginally from 128 to 135. In the final year shown, landlines had fallen to a mere 9 per 100 people.
