The table provides data on the average number of hours per day that four age groups in one country devoted to three screen-based activities in 2024.
Overall, adults aged 18 to 29 spent the most time in front of screens, whereas those over 50 spent by far the least. The nature of screen use also varied considerably with age: younger people were dominated by social media, while those in middle age spent most of their screen time working or studying online.
Teenagers aged 12 to 17 recorded the highest social media use of any group, at 3.4 hours daily, more than four times the figure for the over-fifties. They also watched the second-largest amount of streaming video, at 2.6 hours, but devoted only 1.8 hours to study.
Among 18-to-29-year-olds, online work or study rose to 3.6 hours, producing the highest overall total of 8.7 hours. This pattern intensified in the 30-to-49 group, where work accounted for 4.4 hours — the single largest figure in the table — while social media fell to 1.5 hours.
Respondents aged 50 and over were the clear exception, with a total of just 4.6 hours, over half of which consisted of streaming video.
